What is an overnight in horse racing? ›

overnight race: A race in which entries close a specific number of hours before running (such as 48 hours), as opposed to a stakes race for which nominations close weeks and sometimes months in advance.

Equibase Company is a partnership between subsidiaries of The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America and serves as the Thoroughbred industry's official database.

The Race Rating is displayed in the race header area, and is an estimate of what the winner of today's race will earn for an Equibase Speed Figure (Thoroughbred) or speed rating (Quarter Horse and Arabian) and assumes that the winner will perform a "best effort."

Overnight declarations. Horses entered for a race must be 'declared to run' and this usually happens the day before a race – horses left in a race at this stage are known as 'overnight declarations' and they comprise the final field for each race which appears on the day of the race in newspapers and in racecards.

Championship quality thoroughbreds cost between $100,000 and $300,000 to purchase and about $45,000 a year in expenses. Of course, buying a thoroughbred is competitive and purchase prices can easily exceed $300,000.

Understanding the Cost of Owning a Racehorse

However, the purchase price is just the tip of the iceberg. Owners must also account for training fees, which can range from £2,000 to £3,000 per month. Add to that veterinary bills, insurance, transport and entry fees for races, and the costs can quickly add up.

Oftentimes these are referred to as “overnight stakes” or “listed stakes”. In a handicap, the racing Secretary or track handicapper assigns weight based upon past performances with the goal of giving each horse an equal chance to win the race.

Over the summer leaving your horse out in their pasture overnight isn't much of a worry. However, with winter drawing in you might be feeling bad about leaving your horse outdoors overnight. Horses can thrive with a combination of being stabled and having free rein of the pasture.

Run until the sun comes up again. Remember the goal is just to go through the night. There is no need to run hard, fast or do anything specific. Just run and hike at an EnduranceRun or RecoveryRun intensity. After your overnight run, continue on to a normal day.

Study highlights: Horses have nearly continuous feeding needs that don't stop during the night. Owners should consider slowing down forage consumption using a trickle feeding system. Horses that were fed forage using a slow feeder system still had haylage available between 3 and 6am.
