Round 14 Team Lists: Five Origin stars out of action, Sailor gets recall, Edwards a chance at Panthers (2024)

North Queensland will rest Reece Robson and Murray Taulagi from round 14 after the pair pulled up sore following the State of Origin series opener.

But the Cowboys will wait until closer to Saturday night’s home game against the Warriors to determine whether Jeremiah Nanai, Reuben Cotter, Tom Dearden and Val Holmes can back up from Wednesday night’s Origin I.

All four of the quartet were kept in the Cowboys’ 24-hour pre-game squad list on Friday evening, but could still drop out of the team before Saturday’s 5.30pm kick-off.

In a further blow to the Cowboys, they have also lost prop Jordan McLean to a calf injury.

Sam McIntyre has been named at hooker as a replacement for Robson, who has reported a sore neck after playing 80 minutes for NSW in their 38-10 loss. Back-up rake Jake Granville is unavailable with a biceps injury.

Braidon Burns looks set to keep his spot on Taulagi’s wing after impressing since joining the Cowboys from South Sydney mid-season. Taulagi has a minor shoulder complaint but, like Robson, is not expected to miss any game time beyond round 14.

Joseph Suaalii‘s immediate State of Origin career looks over after the rugby union-bound star accepted a four-match ban for his shot on Reece Walsh.

It comes as fellow NSW stalwart Liam Martin begins his recovery from a foot injury that is set to curtail his preparations for game two.

Undermanned NSW’s 38-10 loss to Queensland in Origin I has left new coach Michael Maguire to ponder team selection before the side travels to Melbourne with the series on the line on June 26.

Suaalii became only the sixth man in Origin history to be sent off, after making late and high shoulder contact with Queensland’s fullback in the early minutes of Wednesday night’s opener.

The hit knocked Walsh unconscious, condemned the Blues to a heavy loss at home, and left Suaalii facing a lengthy ban for his grade-two reckless high tackle charge.

Walsh suffered a category-one concussion in the incident and will miss Saturday’s Suncorp Stadium stoush with the Sharks, who are resting Nicho Hynes due to his calf problem that he took into Origin.

Meanwhile, Penrith confirmed Martin injured a ligament in his left foot during the first half of Origin I.

Martin required painkilling injections at half-time on Wednesday night and is set to miss Penrith’s round-14 clash against Manly. But the Panthers are hopeful he will play in their round-15 meeting with Newcastle and insist he is not in doubt for Origin II.

Dylan Edwards is not yet ruled out after being named on the extended bench. After a quad strain cruelly denied him his Origin debut, he has been named in the reserves for Penrith so could make a late charge into the 17 for Sunday’s clash against Manly.

Penrith have named Moses Leota despite the triple premiership-winning prop leaving last week’s loss to St George Illawarra with a hamstring concern.

Cronulla coach Craig Fitzgibbon has named his Origin lock Cameron McInnes in this weekend’s starting 13, while second-rower Teig Wilton (shoulder) is out.

Hampered by a right calf issue since early last month, Hynes is the only player on either Origin side who was not named in the extended squad for their side’s game this weekend – other than players whose teams have the bye.

The Sharks will instead start Braydon Trindall and Daniel Atkinson in the halves for Saturday night’s clash at Suncorp Stadium and spare Hynes from playing on the trip to Brisbane.

New Zealand welcome back in-form fullback Charnze Nicole-Klokstad, while regular centre Rocco Berry comes in after he was a late withdrawal last week.

Addin Fonua-Blake reclaims his spot as the Wahs big man following disciplinary issues, as Wayde Egan returns at the base of the ruck – with captain Tohu Harris back to his staple No.13 spot but Shaun Johnson (pec) needs another week out.

Cowboys coach Todd Payten has decided against naming his Origin stars in the best 17, leaving the Queensland representatives on the extended bench due to the quick turnaround.

Heilum Luki has been selected at second-row despite an above-horizontal tackle scare against the Roosters.

The Bulldogs will charge into Easter Monday at full-tilt, pending the fitness of Stephen Crichton, as coach Ciraldo has named his best outfit.

They face an equally full capacity Eels, who have also named their sole Origin representative in J’maine Hopgood, making for a mouth-watering public holiday contest.

Cody Walker and Jack Wighton will pair together in the South Sydney halves for the first time after the former recovered from the minor calf issue that scuppered his NSW chances.

Walker returns for the Rabbitohs’ clash with a Gold Coast side that has crafty fullback Jayden Campbell back from a knee injury and veteran Kieran Foran on deck after his hamstring issue.

Parramatta rookie Blaize Talagi comes into the backline to face Canterbury after the club confirmed Bailey Simonsson would miss the remainder of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
