  • The Advanced Certificate, Residency Training for Radiation Therapy Physics provides students training in clinical and didactic radiation oncology physics to attain a level of competence that they can take on the responsibilities of a radiation oncology physicist in a clinic. Students will train in the clinic in dosimetry, brachytherapy, machine quality assurance (QA) and calibration, treatment planning and dose calculations, radiation safety, imaging, and special procedures (stereotactic radiosurgery, total skin electron treatment, etc.).

This competitive 24-month program is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Students choosing to pursue this program can choose two options at SDSU: an Associate of Arts (A.A.) path or a Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) path. An A.A. degree includes one year of coursework completed at SDSU followed by another two years of full-time professional-level internship completed at the Avera McKennan School of Radiologic Technology. A B.G.S. degree includes two years of coursework completed at SDSU and followed by another two years of a professional-level internship completed at the Avera McKennan School of Radiologic Technology. Background and Program Overview Radiologic technologists, or radiographers, use medical imaging equipment to produce diagnostic images that assist radiologists in the diagnosis of injury or disease. Radiographers can work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, offices and clinics or diagnostic imaging centers. Students must complete an accredited program, earn an academic degree and pass a national certification examination in order to become a registered radiographer. Each week, a radiologic technology student will spend 40 hours in the hospital and radiology department. Training will be in general diagnostic radiography, trauma, fluoroscopy and surgery. Students will participate in rotations at several locations including Avera Orthopedics, Avera Specialty Hospital, Prairie Center and Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Medical Center.
